PS Vita And PS4 Launch Trailer For ‘Broken Age’ Revealed [Video]

PS Vita And PS4 Launch Trailer For "Broken Age" Revealed

PS Vita fans, rejoice. The handheld Vita gaming console is getting a new addition to its family of games. Broken Age, according to PlayStation Lifestyle, is a “… timeless coming of age story” featuring Vella Tartine and Shay Volta, two teenagers in “strangely similar situations but radically different worlds.” PlayStation Lifestyle adds that players will get to control both characters, alternating at will between Vella and Shay’s stories, as they help both characters navigate their respective issues. A recent article on Inquisitr.com also reported that there are more major changes coming to PS Vita in the near future.

Other PS Vita titles fans might recognize include Final Fantasy Dissidia and Borderlands 2, along with the world-famous 3D creation game, Minecraft. These series, of course, are not exclusive to PS Vita or even PlayStation as a whole, just among some of the bigger titles in the gaming world. Broken Age designer Tim Schafer, who the Guardian reported created the Monkey Island adventure game series, spoke with the site about the making of Broken Age.

The Guardian reported that Schafer utilized fundraising site Kickstarter to raise money for Broken Age, promising donors a $100,000 documentary about the making of the game that would show them where their contributions were going. In addition, the site added that Schafer will release the game in two separate parts, the second half of which will be released a year after the first part, causing some to have doubts about funding the project. Whatever people’s thoughts on the project, Schafer was quoted as saying he would do it again, so clearly he’s happy about the project.

Broken Age is possibly unique in ways other than being crowdsourced using Kickstarter. For one thing, despite the PS Vita’s impressive graphical rendering abilities, Playstation Lifestyle reported that the game will be created in 2D. For another, most games have a tendency to tell players which characters’ points-of-view they’ll be playing from during the game, whereas Broken Age gives players a choice of viewpoint.

As mobile gaming becomes more popular, Broken Age could face competition from phone and tablet-based alternatives, but it may also gain an advantage for being available on a PS Vita handheld, making it mobile without having to stick to the expected mediums. Metacritic reported that there is also an iPad version of the game available.

Whatever the case, Broken Age is getting good press thus far. Video game review site Metacritic gave the first half of the game (subtitled “Act I”) an average of 4.5 out of 5 stars. The iPad launch trailer, which has a light-hearted tone to it, includes commentary from its creator and the game’s art director Lee Petty, shown while they’re playing the game on an iPad. Do you think the idea of gaming on a PS Vita or similar handheld device (i.e. Nintendo 3DS) is a sustainable one, or does having games available on a mobile device make them more accessible to someone who uses their phone or tablet heavily?
