Motorola Moto E Pros & Cons

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the Moto E?

Motorola Moto E

Pros

Price – I’ll come straight out and say it first of all, the price on the Moto E is incredible. At just £99 including VAT, this is the first sub £100 smartphone from a big name that is really capable of providing a high quality user experience.

Processor – It might not be the fastest clock speed at 1.2 GHz dual-core, however Motorola’s decision to use a Qualcomm processor (the Snapdragon 200) shows a commitment to quality not seen in other budget devices. Other manufacturers might use cheaper, lesser known processors in order to keep costs down and still show off a half-decent specification. Not Motorola. Qualcomm are the best in the business and Motorola know that.

Screen – In both size and resolution, Motorola impress with the Moto E. It’s generally a given that cheaper phones have smaller screens, next to the processor it’s the most expensive component. 4.3″ isn’t small by anyone’s standards and it has served Apple well for many years. The qHD resolution is excellent however, the number of phones that sit around this price that can’t break 480 x 800 is too many to count.

Expansion Slot – It’s needed with the small internal memory but Motorola could have left this option out if they chose to. With official support up to 32 GB, you can increase your storage 8 fold for music, pictures and video.

Android KitKat – Another way to keep down costs in cheap smartphones of the past has been to skimp on the Android version installed. Motorola have gone completely the other way offering the newest 4.4 KitKat out of the box. The installation is light and Motorola don’t add in any big extras to eat up your base storage.

Size and form factor – Many complain that the expensive flagship phones, and to some extent smartphones in general, are becoming too big to use comfortably. The debate will carry on regardless but Motorola have opted for the sweet spot with the Moto E. The 4.3″ is that favoured by Sony’s massively popular Z1 Compact and is flanked by a generous but not overbearing amount of bezel and casing. The rounded edges and curved make the E a very comfortable fit to most hands; it’s the Goldilocks ‘just right’ of sizes for the majority.

Cons

Camera – Concessions inevitably had to be made to get the price under £100 and Motorola chose to make the biggest in the camera, in order to provide a quality screen & processor. At 5 megapixels it isn’t the worst available, although it has been clipped by not being able to record in 720p like the Moto G.

Front facing camera – There isn’t one. Which is a cost right of the window. Selfie lovers will have to do it the old fashioned way and turn the phone around and unfortunately no FFC means no video calls or live Hangouts on the E.

Storage – 4 GB is the lowest base storage that can viably installed on an Android handset so Motorola have admittedly gone for the lowest rung of the ladder here. The expansion slot makes up for storage concerns with media, however you will have to be careful what apps you install.

No compass – It’s not a major omission but it’s still something missing. There is an accelerometer (g-sensor) in the Moto E, but no compass.

That’s it really – at £99 you can’t expect a powerhouse of a phone so there’s very little wrong with the Moto E. Everywhere it could fall down; screen, processor, memory card, sound quality, Android version etc. are all well catered for.

The Motorola Moto E is available now for just £99 on our retail site.
